Uth Oye

Previously, the people of Soon had to rely on substances other than natural gas to produce heat for their basic day to day needs. The absence of gas lines in their village made chopped wood the only other viable alternative. The most natural source of this wood was from trees in their immediate surroundings. So they chopped, and they chopped. And no matter how many trees they planted, they would always end up chopping more than they could plant.

This made for a scenario drenched in irony: A community which relied on farming as its primary source of income now had to face soil erosion and deforestation just so that they could have wood for cooking and heating.

No more we said.

In March 2010, Uth Oye! and ADP (Association for the Development of Pakistan) joined forces to engineer a sustainable, long-term solution for the people of Khushab. This resulted in the construction of 15 natural bio-gas generators that generate usable gas by fermenting common waste items (Manure, Human Waste and Sewage)

Summary for the Lazy:

  • No gas for cooking and heating in Soon Valley
  • Farmers chop lots of wood to burn. This makes land barren.
  • Farmers go “uh-oh” when they realize they have to grow crops to live. They go “uh-oh x2” when they also realize that they can’t live without cooked food and heating. Lose-Lose.
